My inferiority complex is now WORSE

I distinctly remember one morning about six months ago when I was making Nathaniel's sandwich for his lunchbox:

Nathaniel: "Mommy, please cut my sandwich in eight triangles."

Me: [sigh] "Why in the world do you need eight triangles? It's already cut in four."

Nathaniel: "Well, PAUL'S MOM cuts HIS sandwiches into eight triangles."

I totally gave in and cut it into eight triangles, by the way, BECAUSE I'M NOT PLAYING SECOND FIDDLE TO PAUL'S MOM, and it went on that way until he got bored of it about two weeks later. Haven't done it since.

But I saw this article today about a dad in Nebraska who spends over an hour each night on his son's lunches, which are veritable masterpieces. See?

CLEARLY I CAN NEVER LET NATHANIEL SEE THIS.

None of those look like they taste good. Who wants raw broccoli, carrots and pineapple for lunch?

I can see your point of view, considering that I sent Nathaniel to school today with a lunch that consisted of a peanut butter sandwich, Pringles and a pack of mini-Oreos left over from the time I had to take snacks to soccer in October.

But some parents are actually heavily invested in healthy living!

While I do pack fresh fruits and veggies in my kids' lunches most days, I don't spend that kind of time on them! That's a little TOO much for me.... That being said, we do have 'theme' meals sometimes - "orange day" where everything is orange, "breakfast for lunch," and sometimes a build-your-own salad in their bentos. Sometimes there are Oreos or other special treats - which happened much more often around the holidays....
I have found that if it looks cute/fun, my kids are more likely to eat - or at least try - new foods.

No guilt here! My girls had a choice between 2 lunches... one from home or cafeteria. They usually chose the one from home. They were just happy that they didn't have mystery meat for lunch! Sometimes I used cookie cutters to cut their sandwiches, but those aren't "cool" for much past the first grade.

Clearly, this man has too much time on his hands...I wonder if he has a day job as a cake decorator or some other creative outlet?
