If you REALLY want to push them over the edge

Do you want to know what makes my kids' eyes widen in fear?

I mean, this practically bothers them more than the prospect of getting a shot at the pediatrician's office.

I put this in front of one of them, and they flee the scene.

I mean, I get it, but Lord help me. Bananas just seem to ripen really quickly in our kitchen. We have them two days and they start turning. Sometimes I peel them and slice them up, cutting out the "spots" so the boys don't get upset about it. If I don't, here's how it goes down:

Me: "Here's a banana."

One of them: "Yum." [peeling, peeling]

One of them: "WAIT A MINUTE. THIS HAS A SPOT ON IT."

Me: "Oh, it's hardly anything. Here, let me cut it out for you." [cutting, cutting]

Me: "Here ya go. Good as new. No Spots."

One of them: "I still see some brown."

Me: "That's not the same thing. That's just a little brown in the core of the banana. That doesn't come off."

One of them: "BROWN."

Its sad because I used to be the same way! But my love for bananas would overcome the brown!

If you will cut the bananas from the top part where they all connect they will not ripen as fast. When the bananas are developing on the tree they get their nutrients from the stalk where they connect to the tree. They continue to get nutrients until they are cut apart. Cut all the bananas apart and they don't go bad quite as quickly. This has been your informative comment for the day. :) Hope you have a great day.

I totally have to concur with Rachel....the cutting them apart works! Try it :)

Rachel and Megan, I HAD NO IDEA! I will definitely do that, starting with the bunch of six that we have sitting in our fruit bowl right now!

Catherine, What an eye you have! Yes, that's a piece of McCarty Pottery in the post featuring my fruit bowl. :) I'm a big fan ... I have seven or eight pieces, all in the "nutmeg" finish. I went to Merigold, Miss., to their shop about eight years ago and LOVED it!
