Somebody got spoiled

We spent Thanksgiving week around both sets of Amelia's grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Aunt Debbie

There were about 25 people around at any given time.

Cousin Heather

That's roughly 50 arms that were available to snuggle the only small baby in attendance.

Aunt Pam

Nary a moment passed that Amelia wasn't being cuddled.

Cousin Tiffany

If it wasn't someone who just wanted to hold her, it was someone who wanted to feed her.

Cousin Jack

If it wasn't an adult asking, it was a child.

 Cousin Mikey

And if ONE child got to hold her, they ALL wanted to hold her.

Cousin Charlie

Amelia would have you believe that she didn't care too much for Patrice ...

She looked like she'd burst into tears at any second.

But I assure you that she LOVED her ... despite much evidence to the contrary.

Now that we're home again, I'm struggling to remind her that I only have two arms. I can't hold her every second of the day.

Cousin Todd and his wife, Keila

She's not too fond of that reality. She just got REALLY comfortable with having willing arms to hold her 24/7 last week.

Cousin Kim

So if anyone's available to hold a baby full-time, I'm accepting applications. That Christmas tree isn't going to decorate itself.

Happy Thanksgiving

I hope that today, you find some time to gaze into a roaring fire,

piddle around on your laptop by lamplight with no distractions,

and relax on the couch with your grandmom.

All three would be even better. Happy Thanksgiving from our home to yours.

Our Thanksgiving has begun

I left Birmingham last Friday to drive up to Gatlinburg, Tenn., with my friend Lisa. We were headed to a mountain cabin there to celebrate our college roommate and friend Honor's 40th birthday.

HI, HONOR! EVERYONE KNOWS YOU'RE OLD NOW.

I'd love to share pictures with you of someone else's 40th birthday weekend, but unfortunately I didn't take any pictures.

** GASPS FROM THE INTERNET. **

I know. So unusual. This was a trip without our kids (also unusual), and another woman who was there took a few pictures. I doubt I'll ever see them.

At any rate, Sunday morning at 10:00 we started toward home from Gatlinburg, and I rode back to Chattanooga with Honor to meet Grayson and the kids at a Cracker Barrel. Unfortunately, I beat them to Chattanooga by a few hours, so I sat out on the 'Barrel porch and read a book. (Actually, now that I think about it, there was no "unfortunately" about it.)

I was meeting them in Chattanooga so that I could take over driving and head back along the same route I'd just traveled, through Knoxville, and on into North Carolina to my parents' mountain house.

I'll leave out all the gory details and just tell you that my trip that day took 13 hours.

THIRTEEN HOURS. For a trip that -- from Gatlinburg to Waynesville alone -- covers 68.6 miles and should take an hour and 21 minutes.

Bygones.

At any rate, now we're here, and Monday we took the boys over to the Rec Center to swim.

They had a great time, and it was really fun except that the pool isn't heated.

The boys -- intrepid swimmers that they are -- didn't care at all.

I, on the other hand, was CHILLY. Jake took no notice.

Neither did Nick.

They tried out all their tricks, seemingly just as comfy in the water as they were in August.

For a small town, Waynesville has a surprisingly beautiful, functional Rec Center.

Every time we visit, the boys beg to go there.

I was a little surprised by Nick's choice to Riverdance in the fountain. But whatever.

Nathaniel opted for an old-fashioned Indian rain dance. Or something.

The important thing is, we had a lot of fun.

And that's what vacations and time spent with family are for.

Rip roaring, throw-your-hands-up-in-the-air FUN.

I hope your week is filled with just as much of it as ours is.

Our pretty little girl

We're on the road this week, and I'm enjoying the heck out of this one.

Even if most of the faces she makes are pretty silly.

She spends a lot of time trying to figure out if she wants to look confused ...

... concerned ...

... dubious ...

... pitiful ...

... irritated ...

... skeptical ...

... argumentative ...

... pensive ...

... daydreaming ...

... ready to interrupt ...

... or OVER IT.

On the kids' Christmas lists

Every year when I see pictures of our nieces and nephews opening their Christmas gifts, I always see a few in their piles that I wish I'd thought of for our boys.

Therefore, I thought I'd post some things that are on our boys' wishlists for you all, and in the Comments I'd love it if you'd leave ideas for me to consider.

I will say this: I am OVER the toys that come in a million pieces. Our kids are still learning to clean up after themselves -- meaning, I do it a lot of the time and they do it only after I've asked 20 times.

But here are some of the things our kids may or may not be getting this year:

Flybar Foam Master Pogo Stick, $39.99 at Amazon

Harry Potter boxed set, all 7 books in hardcover, $114.72 at Amazon

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, $9.70 at Amazon

Big Nate and Friends, $9.99 at Amazon

Melissa and Doug, 60-piece block set, $48.78 at Amazon

Megamind on DVD, $12.49 at Amazon

Cars 2 on DVD, $15.49 at Amazon

Tangled on DVD, $15.49 at Amazon

Toy Story 3 on DVD, $15.49 at Amazon
Tech Deck Skate Shop skateboard variety pack, $24.75 at Amazon

Star Wars Clone Wars Grievous Spinning Lightsaber, $34.99 at Amazon

Apple 8GB iPod Touch, $189.98 at Amazon

Hopefully that helps you as you make your list for your kids ... if you have any ideas for me, please share!
