Opening and closing

I have lots of idiosyncracies. LOTS.

One of them is that I can't stand to see a door or drawer that's not completely closed. I mean, if you're getting something out of a drawer or cabinet, go on with your bad self, but when you're done, CLOSE IT. ALL THE WAY.

Note to pre-schoolers who live in my house: This includes the refrigerator. Its drawer-closedness is the very thing that keeps those sacred cheese sticks and yogurt smoothies chilled for future consumption.

So this particular idiosyncracy is a difficult one to have when you live with four boys -- even if one of them is a "grown-up." On any given day as I pass through any room in our house, this is what I see:

In the foyer:

It may not LOOK open, but trust me, it is. And Scout knows it. He's sitting there waiting on the tiny little gnats and mosquitoes that squeeze themselves through the crack that's left when someone runs out the door, hoping it will slam shut behind them. It won't. It pops back open.

In the kitchen:

In the den:

In Nathaniel and Nicholas' room:

Therefore, I close a LOT more doors than I open. (Is that a metaphor for my life? I hope not.) Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon in their house?

You forgot the toilet seat, but I guess that's not technically a "door."

I am very, very lucky that all three Big Boys put the seat down. That is perhaps the greatest gift -- aside from TiVo -- that Grayson has ever given me.

I am laughing out loud at this because my husband can't close a cabinet door to save his life. He knows it drives me mad, too, so I'll occassionally walk into the kitche and find EVERY cabinet door wide open (on purpose). I recently took some of the doors off the upper cabinets, and it helps! Of course, now i have to keep everything super neat ...

(found you through Darby, I'm in Birmingham, too)

Jennifer, I'm glad you got a kick out of it ... some days it just about puts me over the edge! But I know I'm not the only one who suffers from this. :) I wish that I could take some of the doors off of my kitchen cabs, but honestly, the insides are just really ugly. We don't have matching glasses, the insides of the cabs aren't painted, and most of them are jammed full. All of that can be remedied, of course, but I think I'll just stick with the doors!
