Now, I will preface the following confession with this: I take pictures of ALL of their best artwork and put them in their scrapbooks, so it's not like it gets trashed, never to be seen again. Having said that, after we've displayed said artwork for about three weeks, I throw it away and rotate in new things, OR I leave the fridge clean for some blissful period of time (usually about two days).
Last weekend I did one of the nice cleanings, in which all the art was photographed and thrown away.
An hour later, I was cleaning up after the kids' lunch when Nicholas went to throw his plate in the trash. He stopped, mid-throw, and looked over at the fridge:
Nick: "Mommy, why is the fridge so clean?"
Me: "I cleaned it up a little bit."
Nick: [holding up his glittery magnet, pinched between thumb and index finger] "WHAT I MEANT WAS, WHY IS MY WATERING CAN IN THE TRASH?"
Me: "Oh, well, I was making room for all of your NEW artwork. Ms. Jackie has been sending a lot home lately."
Nick: "Well, I want my watering can back on the fridge. RIGHT HERE IN THE MIDDLE."
And he stuck it in its place of honor. And there it will stay ... for at least three more weeks.

Oh, it's so hard for me to toss this stuff! So, I save everything that's not make with glitter, food (pretzels, marshmallows), or other equally messy things. I have about 2 boxes of it right now. My son doesn't even want to throw away his 'show-and-tell bag' (a paper lunch bag) each week. What a terrible example I've been! I think it's time to take action.... I like the idea of copying it all - and if I scan it, I can put some of it on my blog!
Well, he was right...it's as if Michelangelo painted that friggin' thing. Nick has mad skills.
So, I'm a bit of a blog stalker...I found yours through Darby's and I can totally relate to the fridge "issue"! My mother did the EXACT same thing when we were kids. I only remember being really offended by her practice once or twice, so you won't scar them for life. Love your blog!
Ryan Leigh, It's actually not hard at all for me to throw it away. (Ha!) But it would be if I didn't photograph it and scrapbook it. Nathaniel recently brought home his year-long Journal from Kindergarten, and it had a page for every single school day in it. I ran it through a copier that PDF'd it, and now I have it electronically and I can e-mail it to my family members and/or post individual entries on the blog. It's in a big 3-ring binder, so it's impractical to keep it ... if I did, it would end up in our attic or in a random drawer somewhere, only to be lost. I prefer the "electronic storage" option over that fate.
SET, Nick would agree with you that he has mad skills. He is proud of EVERYTHING he does, and he always asks me, "Mommy, are you PWOUD of me?" So sweet.
Megan, Welcome from Darby's blog! I'm glad you came over to say hello. So glad to hear that I'm not REALLY traumatizing my kids. Although as my pastor says, "I'm just giving them material to talk about with their therapist in 10 years."
